Controversial mogul and antivirus pioneer John McAfee on Wednesday died by suicide in a jail mobile in Barcelona, hours after studies that he would be extradited to face federal expenses in the U.S.
McAfee was 75. He is mentioned to have died by hanging “as his nine months in jail introduced him to despair,” in accordance to McAfee’s lawyer Javier Villalba, Reuters described. Safety personnel at the Brians 2 prison tried out to revive McAfee, but he was eventually declared dead, per Related Push.
News of his loss of life will come immediately after Spain’s Countrywide Court approved his extradition to the U.S. to experience federal prison tax evasion rates.
McAfee labored for NASA, Xerox, and Lockheed Martin right before launching the world’s very first commercial antivirus software program in 1987. He afterwards resigned from the namesake security business in 1994.
The previous cybersecurity tycoon turned fugitive was detained in Spain past Oct for “willful failure to file tax returns,” with the U.S. Division of Justice (DoJ) alleging that McAfee evaded tax liabilities by concealing assets and directing his money to lender accounts and cryptocurrency trade accounts in the names of nominees.
Before this March, the DoJ indicted McAfee a second time on wire fraud and money laundering costs for applying social media to carry out an unlawful pump-and-dump cryptocurrency plan that reportedly netted $2 million as well as advertise original coin offerings (ICOs) without disclosing that he was currently being compensated “to tout these securities on behalf of the ICO.”
